There are numerous educational opportunities within a short distance of Truckee. The Western Nevada Community College in Carson City and Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno can be found within approximately 30 miles. Other options include Sierra College in Rocklin and Yuba College in Rocklin, both of which are about 80 miles from the town. Primary and secondary students are served by the Tahoe-Truckee Joint Unified School District. This district also serves students of Tahoe City however the majority of the districts school lie within Truckee. The largest public schools offered by the town include Tahoe Truckee High, Alder Creek Middle and Glenshire Elementary. Private education is also available with the Truckee Tahoe Christian School serving grades K-9.

Truckee is a town full of exciting attractions. Residents have convenient access to beautiful Donner Lake. The West End Beach is a popular relaxing spot on the west shores of the lake with stunning views. With its interesting history, Donner Memorial State Park also tops the list of major attractions. The park contains a museum and monument in honor of the Donner families and is a great spot for outdoor recreation with hiking trails as well as campgrounds. In winter the Tahoe Donner Ski Area is a popular location with above average annual snowfalls and 14 trails.
